Grafton County New Hampshire

The Old Man of the Mountain's memory still dominates New Hampshire's Grafton County, though the state's premier rock star crumbled in May of 2003.

He still lives on key chains, mouse pads, postcards and T-shirts, and he symbolizes a way of life that is both rigorous and playful.

Grafton New Hampshire

While the landscape is rugged, causing year-round residents to be independent and resourceful, it's also a three-season playground. Like Carroll County, its counterpart on the eastern end of the state, it caters to skiers, leaf-peepers, mountain climbers, and those who just want a breath of fresh New Hampshire air.

Grafton County is home to some of New Hampshire's most popular attractions, including Franconia, Pinkham and Sandwich notches and Clark's Trading Post. The Indian Head, another rock sculpture, broods over the resort of the same name. Actress Bette Davis summered in Sugar Hill for years, and the Waterville Valley Resort offers something for everyone in every season.

Even the tourist attractions have a provenance. Most have been in these mountains for years, and family owners such as the Clarks happily welcome back the children and grandchildren of their guests. "Guests" is the operative word here. Other venerable attractions include the Polar Caves and Lost River. If it isn't broke, Grafton County doesn't tend to fix it.

But Grafton County also offers technological advances and cultural refreshment at Dartmouth College, in Hanover; Plymouth State College in Plymouth; and Lebanon, the county's only city. There are plenty of year-round activities and resources for people who choose to settle here. Interstate routes 89 and 93 are nearby, for anyone who finds they have to leave these mountains.

In the 2000 census, the median income for a household in the county was $41,962, and the median income for a family was $50,424. Males had a median income of $31,874 versus $25,286 for females. The per capita income for the county was $22,227. About 5.10% of families and 8.60% of the population were below the poverty line.
