In Rockingham County, there's something for everybody!
New Hampshire's Rockingham County is one of the state's strongest tourist bases, with dozens of attractions for the traveler. But it's also home base to residents of the state who like the variety of things to do, the proximity to other things to do, and the convenience for business operations.
Rockingham County is the host for New Hampshire's 18 miles of seacoast, with attractions ranging from the carnival atmosphere of Hampton's Main Beach to quiet coves in Rye and North Hampton to the cosmopolitan city of Portsmouth. The dedicated coast-goer can have their name carved on a grain of rice, eat fried dough, play an arcade game, catch some sun or a wave, and take in a concert or live theater performance all in the same day. And that's just on the coast.
Prefer fresh water? The county stretches to Northwood in the west, home to nine lakes and ponds. Nottingham boasts Pawtuckaway State Park, and Kingston has Kingston State Park. There are three water parks, in Portsmouth, Hampton and Candia. Live harness racing at Rockingham Park in Salem and live greyhound racing at the Seabrook Greyhound Park add to the excitement, while Exeter and Portsmouth offer antiques, boutiques and pre-Revolutionary history. America's Stonehenge in North Salem offers a glimpse into an even earlier past.
In Rockingham County all roads lead to Portsmouth, whether it's a scenic drive past the ocean, the commercial strip on Route 1, or a back road through apple orchards and stone-walled fields. The Port City is a hub for culture, including professional theater companies; shopping; and dining in multi-starred restaurants. The town was settled by Europeans in 1623, and played a part in the American Revolution. Portsmouth was recently named by "Money" Magazine as the country's fifth best place to live. Next door in Newington, the former Pease Air Force Base has reinvented itself as a center for business and industry. And if you prefer a busy border town to saltwater, Salem and Plaistow have New Hampshire charm --- and real estate -- with a dash of Massachusetts spice.
While there's entertainment of every stripe in Rockingham County, residents who want a change are just an hour from ski slopes, Portland or Boston. Easy access to routes 93 and 95 make it a good fit for business, and beaches, lakes and good schools offer opportunities for families.
Based on a 2007 estimate, the median income for a household in Rockingham County is $72,600 and $85,361 for a family. In the 2000 census, men were ranked with a median income of $45,598, females with a median of $30,741 and per capita, $26,656. About 3.10 percent of families and 4.50 percent of the population were ranked below the poverty line.
The pace is a little faster here; with more things to do and more people doing them, but Rockingham County is still a place where your bank teller knows your name.
