While Minnesota has its Twin Cities, New Hampshire's Strafford County has its Tri-City region of Dover, Rochester and Somersworth. The trio have recently come into their own with shops, theaters and restaurants. Dover's red-brick downtown includes boutiques such as Nuance and Blue Moon, eateries ranging from Mexican to the iconic Harvey's Bakery, and the Children's Museum of New Hampshire. Rochester offers theater at the Opera House, dining at the Governor's Inn, and an annual Lilac Festival. Somersworth has the International Children's Festival in June and one of the best breakfasts in the area at the Wooden Spoon.
In Durham is the University of New Hampshire, a center for academic research, recreation and culture. The Whittemore Center presents concerts and college hockey, the New England Center offers fine dining, and the college hosts dozens of lectures and programs open to the public. Families can grab a cone at the UNH Dairy Bar, see a children's play at the Johnson Theater, or catch the late-night star show at the Observatory. Walks or winter sledding on Wagon Hill, one of the most photographed sites in New Hampshire, are a Durham tradition.
Rollinsford, a classic New England mill town, is enjoying a renaissance as artists and musicians spill over from trendy South Berwick, Maine.
Much of Strafford County is rural, and fun takes place out-of-doors. In Lee, a weekend outing could be picking apples at Demeritt Hill Farm, walking the corn maze at Coppal House Farm, or a wine tasting at Flag Hill Vineyards. The Emery Farm in Durham is the oldest farm in the country continually operated by the same family.
In the 2000 census, the median income for a household in Strafford County was $44, 803, and the median income for a family was $53,075. Males had a median income of $36,661, females $26,208. About 5 percent of families and 9.20 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
