York County Maine
|
Maine's southernmost county has been a vacation destination for over 100 years. While York County maintains its reputation as "vacationland," it's also a year-round home for people who love the Maine lifestyle. |
York County, Maine drew national attention (as well as Secret Service men) when the first Bush became president, but tourists and locals alike were already in on the secret - York County has something for everyone.
The names of Biddeford Pool, York Harbor, Ogunquit and Old Orchard Beach summon up images of icy-cold water, saltwater taffy, and dining on the catch of the day. The Marginal Way, a mile-long stretch of beachfront in Ogunquit, is a favorite destination for walkers. Fried clams, lobsters and anything blueberry are part of the local dining lore.
But York County is more than Bushes and beaches. The Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge provides natural resources in a pristine state. The county is also home to 135 mountain peaks and summits, including Mount Agamenticus. The urban areas of Portland, Maine's largest city, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire are minutes away. South Berwick is an arts colony, hosting visual artists, actors and musicians spilling over the border from Portsmouth. Shopping reigns in Kittery, with miles of national-brand outlets and the Kittery Trading Post for sportsmen. And for those wanting still more shopping, the Freeport outlets and the iconic L.L. Bean are a short drive away.
There are plenty of ways to get involved, from volunteer fire departments to small-town theatricals. A weekend excursion could be a trip to Stonewall Kitchen's flagship store or the zoo at York's Wild Kingdom. Interstate Route 95 connects York County with the rest of New England, and the world.
In the 2000 census, the median household income was $43,630, and the median family income was $51,419. Males had a median income of $36,317, and females had a median income of $26,016. The per capita income for the county was $21,255. About 5.90 percent of families and 8.20 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
