Exeter, NH

Exeter is located fifty miles north of Boston and is a short drive to the city of Manchester. With a population of about 14,777 people, the community is viewed by most as an upscale residential town, rich in history and home to the college preparatory school, Phillips Exeter Academy which has a population of about 1,850 students from all around the world. The town boasts brick sidewalks and unique shops, boutiques and cafés in its busy downtown area.

Exeter was established in 1638 and was the state’s capital during the American Revolutionary War. It evolved into a mill town, ideally located where the Exeter River drains into the Squamscott River. Today it offers picturesque small town charm over a total area of 20 square miles, the majority of which is residentially zoned.

Exeter residents value education and the town boasts a highly regarded school system and close proximity to many cultural attractions in the nearby cities of Portsmouth Manchester.

An easy commute to Manchester-Boston Regional Airport allows convenient air travel to most any location in the US and Canada. Route 101 connects the town to points west and east to the Seacoast and I-95 allows easy auto travel to Maine or points south like Boston.

SWAZEY PARKWAY: Nestled along the Squamscott River, it features a winding road and sidewalk to stroll along, park benches and green lawns. Created in 1930, Swasey Parkway has not changed much but features a new pavilion for the Summer Concert Series and hosts a local farmers’ market once per week.

THE FOLSOM TAVERN: Built around 1775 at the corner of Front and Water Streets, the structure was recently moved to the front of the property, across from the entrance to Swazey Parkway, providing additional parking. George Washington "was there" on November 4, 1789.

AMERICAN INDEPENDANCE MUSEUM: Located on Water Street, the small museum small offers a glimpse into Colonial life during 1-hour tours, offered on the hour in season. Displays inside the 1721 house include Revolutionary War and Colonial Revival artifacts and furniture and on special occasions the museum's most prized possession: 1 of just 25 original copies of the Declaration of Independence still known to exist, though copies are always on display.

Police Department: The Exeter Police Department is overseen by Chief Richard Kane is made up of 24 full-time sworn officers employees and provides service 24-hours a day.

Fire Department: The Exeter Fire Department is overseen by Fire Chief Brian Comeau and has 28 full-time Firefighters with an active call company and three civilian employees. Eleven of the full-time members serve as paramedics/EMS. Firefighters/EMS personnel work a rotating shift schedule providing coverage 24-hours per day.

The school system: The Exeter school district (SAU 16) has approximately 3070 students, 530 professional teachers, 35 administrators (which includes principals, assistant principals, directors and central office administrators) and 620 non-certified support staff members(which includes paraprofessionals, maintenance, custodians, secretaries, etc.). In SAU #16, the towns of Brentwood, East Kingston, Exeter, Kensington, Newfields, and Stratham have students who attend the Cooperative Middle and High school- grades 6-12.

Young Exeter students attend Main Street School from grades K-2, Lincoln Street School for grades 3-5, The Cooperative middle school for grades 6-8 and Exeter High School for grades 9-12. The Exeter Region Cooperative School Board, responsible for grades 6-12 and Adult Education in all six towns, is elected by the combined voters of all six communities.

Colleges: Within easy commuting distance is the University of New Hampshire in Durham, Manchester Community Technical College, Southern New Hampshire University and Great Bay Community College, Portsmouth and Northern Essex Community College, Haverhill, MA.
