Origin: Granted in 1727, this community was one of several established to deal with rapidly expanding population in the seacoast area. A majority of new settlers came from either Barnstable on Cape Cod or Hampstead on Long Island, and the name Barnstead is a conjunction of the two. Barnstead Parade, the town's central highway, was located on the Province Road which ran between Portsmouth and the Governor's summer house in Wolfeboro.

Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 807 residents in 1790

Population Trends: Population change for Barnstead totaled 3,068 over 50 years, from 846 in 1950 to 3,914 in 2000. The largest decennial percent change was between 1970 and 1980, when the population increased by 105 percent, more than doubling the population in those ten years. The 2007 Census estimate for Barnstead was 4,567 residents, which ranked 78th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2007: 105.9 persons per square mile of land area. Barnstead contains 42.9 square miles of land area and 2.0 square miles of inland water area.
