Origin: Barrington bears the family name of the English governor of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, Samuel Shute of Barrington Hall. Barrington was once the third largest New Hampshire town in population, ranking after Portsmouth and Gilmanton. Governor Shute, one of the first to promote new industries in the state, set aside a two-mile strip of land which would become part of Barrington for the purpose of securing and smelting iron ore on the Lamprey River.

Population Trends: Population change for Barrington totaled 6,475 over 50 years, from 1,052 in 1950 to 7,527 in 2000. The largest decennial percent change was a 136 percent increase between 1970 and 1980, following an 80 percent increase between 1960 and 1970. The 2007 Census estimate for Barrington was 8,405 residents, which ranked 37th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
